What stats do I need?

At my sister's birthday I was asked about the stats of sports and what is an important metric for each position. As an analyst there are so many different numbers you must crunch, so many factors that play into your readings. How do you read through them? How do you know which one is the one for you?

Offense Stats:

QB: Passer Rating/Comp Percentage/Touchdown to interception ratio

Passer Rating: Passer rating is when you take a players passing attempts, completions, yards touchdowns and interception and rate them on a scale up to 158.3

Comp Percentage: Completion percentage is the percentage of passes completed from the number of passes attempted.

Touchdown to Interception ratio: This is a ratio that determines how many touchdowns the quarterback scores in comparison to the interceptions he throws

WR: Yards/YAC/Targets

Yards: How many yards this person has accrued while the ball is in their possession.

YAC(Yards after Contact): The amount of yards a player has accrued after they have been contacted by a member of the opposing team.

Targets: How many times the ball was thrown with this receiver as the intended target.

RB: YAC/Yards per attempt/Attempts per game

YAC: Yards after contact: The amount of yards a player has accrued after they have been contacted by a member of the opposing team.

Yards per attempt: the average amount of yards the ball carrier produces on their carries.

Attempts Per game: This is the average amount of tries a ball carrier gets to run the ball.

These stats are crucial in determining which players are good consistently, and which ones have inflated stat lines. For quarterbacks the best stat is the passer rating which takes everything they do in account. Completion percentage is always good, however you need to know the attempts as a quarterback can have a 100% completion percentage by completing one pass. The touchdown to interception ratio shows how good the quarterback is on converting drives. For wide receivers yards are important because that shows how many opportunities they can create. YAC is important in both WR and RB because it shows how physical they are and that they can break loose. Then it also shows how good they are at creating space. Targets are very similar to attempts per game, because they both show how pivotal the player truly is.
