Oh my God! We are in the 3rd wave of COVID and this will go on for my entire high school career. One of the ideas I was working on while I was researching ideas for the YEA(Young Entrepreneurs Academy) just a year before COVID hit in its full glory was this concept of ‘School from Home’.. You know, just like our parents have ‘work from home’.
I noticed how occasionally when my parents are not feeling well, they would skip out on going to the office, but get their work done from home and even though that won’t be 100% efficient, it was better than missing the entire day.
With covid cases on the rise, I see there are lots of school students falling sick and then missing school for 10 or more days. They are unable to receive the essential tools for learning, hearing lectures or taking minor tests which prepare them for the major grades. Also, remember that all of these tests count for the final score and these scores count for your rank in class which is a huge factor in college admissions. So you can imagine the loss a student has if they have to be out for 10 days due to COVID. Also, it’s not just COVID, but imagine someone getting injured in a high school game, a family emergency or delayed flight – all of these cases lead to students missing an important class or a meeting or an exam. There have been many days where I have not wanted to go to school. I have wanted to sit in my bed, and not do anything. Then you have to force yourself out of bed and barely pay attention in class, listen to a boring lecture and take notes that you will not understand when you look back at them.
I thought of an idea that would solve this issue. It is basically a hybrid learning scheme. Here, you can stay at home, and listen to the teacher in the comfort of your house, where you can get a snack whenever, and do whatever you want to keep yourself energized. Then you will learn more about the concept, and you can even ask questions. Many teachers post videos about the notes, but that is not always helpful for students, especially when they are confused on a topic that is fundamental in understanding future concepts. This is especially harmful when a student is out for a long time and has to learn the concepts that are very intertwined. It makes the student feel dumb and under pressure when they come back to school. This causes their grades to slip and more pressure is placed upon them to dig themselves out of a hole dug by someone else. This is a never ending cycle for many students, and they work a lot to try and get past it. That is why I thought it was a good idea, and that it should still be implemented in schools nowadays.
In this age of technology, all we need is every class to be equipped with zoom and a headset and you can solve a fundamental problem that our parents have solved for themselves years ago. I have talked to multiple friends of mine and they all have overwhelmingly supported this thought. I have heard from my cousins and friends that some school districts in CA and NJ already follow this process.
Isn’t it high time an awesome school district like FISD implement this?
